What is Portable Appliance Testing?

As explained by the HSE, Portable Appliance Testing refers to the inspection of all electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they’re safe to use – whether this be in a rented property or at work.

This type of testing consists of both a physical examination of the equipment and an actual appliance test carried out with specialist equipment. Why both? This ensures that all types of defects are found, because not all are visible to the eye and likewise, not all issues are detectable with testing equipment alone. Combining both types of examination, all possible hazards can be found.

As a business owner or a landlord, for example, it is your responsibility to ensure that all electrical equipment is kept in a safe to use condition, to reduce the risk of injury, fire or worse. The frequency at which you have these inspections conducted should be based upon the type of equipment in question, how often it’s used and the environment it’s used in.

How do you know when a piece of equipment was last tested? If your equipment was tested by a reliable professional, a label would have been provided to notify you of the last test date and a recommended date of review. This is something we provide to all of our customers.
